Microsoft Launches Azure Purview
Microsoft announced the public preview of a new companion data governance service called Azure Purview yesterday at their “Shape Your Future with Azure Data and Analytics” virtual event. Azure Purview helps you manage and govern your on-premises, multi-cloud, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) data.
Microsoft dabbled with data governance in the Azure Data Catalog, but that was heavily weighted on metadata management, instead of true governance. Any business that wants to jump into the world of data-heavy technologies like predictive analytics, need to make sure that the way the data is used meets compliance regulations.
Microsoft’s Corporate VP, Julia White, stated “Purview helps discover all data across your organization, track lineage of data, and create a business glossary wherever it is stored: on-premises, across clouds, in SaaS applications, and in Power BI. Purview will feature AI classifiers that automatically look for Personally Identifiable Information (PII), sensitive data, and pinpoint out-of-compliance data.” This is a huge step towards helping companies meet their necessary compliance mandates.
