Information Barriers in Microsoft 365 Improves Security and Compliance

04/22/22

Microsoft is about to launch information barriers for its services in Microsoft 365. The ability to block communication between certain departments helps mitigate the possibility of data leaks or insider threats. Through information barriers in Microsoft 365, organizations can restrict communication and collaboration among specific groups of users for business and security purposes.

Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business support information barriers. If your subscription includes them, a compliance administrator can define policies that allow or prevent communications between groups of users.

Information barrier policies can be used for situations like these:

  • Finance personnel with access to confidential company information should not communicate or share files with certain groups within their organization.
  • Engineers working on protected engineering data should not send that data to sales or outside of the organization.
  • Personnel information should only reside and be sent within Human Resources, the executive team, and the department manager.

According to a new post in the Microsoft 365 product roadmap, Microsoft is about to launch version two of information barriers, which will bring new features including flexible people discoverability, increased scalability and multi-segmented support when they roll out in July 2022.
