Survey Says: Digital Projects Pick Up Speed with Majority of Manufacturers Due to COVID

04/15/21

Every industry has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and manufacturing is no exception. In fact, the sector typically infamous for evolving at a snail’s pace has been seen an unlikely uptick in the speed of its adoption of Industry 4.0 over the past year or so.

A recent study commissioned by IBM and researched by The Manufacturer magazine reports that 67 percent of respondents have accelerated digital projects as a result of COVID-19. Also, as a result of COVID, improving operational efficiency is the most significant imperative for 92 percent of manufacturing decision makers.

One issue for manufacturing decision-makers that jumped to the forefront during the pandemic is wellbeing/working environment for employees. Eighty-three percent of respondents said greater emphasis has been placed on this factor due to COVID-19.

The report credits digital communication tools for keeping workers engaged, motivated and up-to-speed, as well as assisting companies in maintaining and managing the mental health of their employees.
