Ransomware Attacks Continue to Wreak Havoc on Businesses
As a small to mid-size business owner who has to wear many hats, it might be easy to let cybersecurity fall to the backburner. Ransomware attacks continue to wreak havoc on businesses all over the world.
However, a few recent incidents should have owners of businesses of all sizes on the alert and reaching out to their IT consultants to boost their cybersecurity solutions:
- Jackson County, Georgia, recently paid hackers $400,000 to regain access to its files. The sum is one of the largest ransoms paid to a ransomware scheme in recent memory.
- The Delaware Guidance Services for Children and Youth, a not-for-profit provider of comprehensive psychiatric services for children and their families in Delaware, also paid off cybercriminals who locked up their network with a ransomware attack. The attack took place in December, and the agency said personal information such as names, addresses, birthdates, Social Security Numbers and medical information, were affected.
- A new Ransomware-as-a-Service called Yatron is being promoted on Twitter. It plans on using the EternalBlue and DoublePulsar exploits to spread to other computers on a network. This ransomware also will attempt to delete encrypted files if a payment has not been made in 72 hours.
Cybersecurity is a complex problem that requires multiple layers of defense. Organizations need to implement endpoint technologies such as antivirus, anti-malware software and firewalls to keep intruders out. You must also acquire the necessary resources to keep up with frequent software, data backups, equipment security updates, as well as providing security training for staff.
