NIST Keeps Your Company In Creation Mode
Maintaining compliance with the innumerable regulations throughout the task may seem like an insurmountable task. Countless industries have standards they must maintain, as well, making this process one of the most tedious aspects of running a business. But the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has attempted to collect these various measurements under one agency to ensure the entrepreneurial spirit of American makers does not get stifled by bureaucracy.
The NIST is a nonregulatory government agency that develops technology, metrics, and standards to drive innovation and economic competitiveness at U.S.-based organizations in the science and technology industry. NIST was founded in 1901 and is now part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST is one of the nation’s oldest physical science laboratories. Congress established the agency to remove a major challenge to U.S. industrial competitiveness at the time, a second-rate measurement infrastructure that lagged behind the capabilities.
Today, NIST measurements support the smallest of technologies to the largest and most complex of human-made creations, from nanoscale devices so tiny that tens of thousands can fit on the end of a single human hair up to earthquake-resistant skyscrapers and global communication networks.
The NIST has headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and facilities in Boulder, Colorado. The NIST consists of six laboratories and numerous extramural program. Its facilities include the Communications Technology Laboratory, Engineering Laboratory Material Measurement Laboratory, NIST Center for Neutron Research and the Physical Measurement Laboratory. NIST extramural programs include Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership and NIST Office of Advanced Manufacturing.
