The latest patches, identified as KB5051987 for Windows 11 24H2 and KB5051989 for Windows 11 23H2, bring several enhancements to built-in tools like the Taskbar and File Explorer. Key improvements include:
- Taskbar Updates: Enhanced previews and animations for Taskbar icons, and a new System Tray icon for apps supporting Windows Studio Effects, which allows special effects via the front-facing camera.
- File Explorer Tweaks: A “New Folder” command in the context menu and the ability to restore previously open tabs, enhancing user convenience.
- New Features: Automatic restart of certain apps after signing back in, and the addition of a new simplified Chinese font, Simsun-ExtG.
Several bugs have been addressed, including:
- File Explorer Glitches: Issues with search repetition, date and time changes after copying files, and icon updates between themes have been resolved.
- Game Display and Audio Issues: Oversaturation in games using Auto HDR, and problems with USB audio devices and drivers have been fixed.
- USB Camera and Shutdown Problems: Recognition issues with USB cameras and slow shutdown processes with connected controllers are now resolved.
This update fixes 56 vulnerabilities, including three classified as critical. Notable patches include:
- CVE-2025-21391: Prevents attackers from deleting files on a targeted system.
- CVE-2025-21418: Addresses remote code execution vulnerabilities.
- CVE-2025-21377: Closes a loophole for credential spoofing.
- CVE-2025-21376: Blocks critical malicious code execution.
These patches are the final versions following the preview updates from January 28, which had introduced additional bugs. The February updates have proven to be more stable and reliable.
The patches are set to install automatically. If they have not been applied yet, you can manually update by navigating to Settings, selecting Windows Update, and clicking on “Check for updates.”
