Contractors working with the U.S. Department of Defense have been waiting in earnest for the chance to earn Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification. The assessing process has moved in the right direction as the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification Accreditation Body has started selecting organizations to assess defense contractors’ cybersecurity frameworks, but there is still a long way to go before there are enough companies in place to conduct this work.

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification Accreditation Body has begun selecting the first organizations that can assess defense contractors’ cyber readiness. The organizations – also known as CMMC Third Party Assessment Organizations are licensed to conduct the assessments using independent contractors or employees as assessors, must still achieve CMMC Level 3 certification and be recognized by the AB and the DOD.

As of two weeks ago, there were 109 approved C3PAOs with 332 pending applicants. Also, there are 100 approved provisional assessors with 43 pending applicants. The AB also has begun training provisional instructors.
