Update on Location History Feature in Windows
Microsoft has announced the removal of the Location History feature from Windows, which previously allowed applications like the Cortana virtual assistant to access the device’s location history. This deprecation means that location data will no longer be stored locally, and the related setting will be eliminated from both Windows 10 and 11.
According to Microsoft’s announcement, “We are deprecating and removing the Location History feature, an API that allowed Cortana to access 24 hours of device history when location was enabled.” The API, known as ‘Geolocator.GetGeopositionHistoryAsync’, provided applications with data collected by location services over the previous 24 hours.
Microsoft clarifies that location services collect position data only when an app or service requests the user’s location, and no more than once per second. Device location data is stored locally and is only populated when actively requested by an application or service.
Developers are advised to review their applications utilizing the Windows.Devices.Geolocation API and to transition away from GetGeopositionHistoryAsync to prevent potential malfunctions in core features in the future. Additionally, the location services option will be removed from Windows Settings > Privacy & Security > Location.
Users have the option to deactivate the setting entirely, thereby blocking location data access requests from all apps and services. After deactivation, users are advised to press the ‘Clear’ button to remove any location data from the last 24 hours.
