A Microsoft commercial tenant is an entity or organization that subscribes to Microsoft’s cloud services, such as Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform. This tenant provides a dedicated, isolated environment used for managing subscriptions, users, and data specific to that organization.

The tenant includes:

    1. Subscription Management: Controls and manages licenses and subscriptions for various Microsoft services.
    2. User Management: Allows administrators to add, manage, and authenticate users within the organization.
    3. Resource Management: Manages resources like virtual machines, databases, storage accounts, and more in Azure.
    4. Security & Compliance: Offers tools and compliance features to secure data and ensure regulatory standards are met.

Commercial tenants are the default and most common type of tenants at Microsoft. They are suitable for most businesses and organizations that do not have specific regulatory or compliance needs. They also have the lowest cost and the most flexibility in terms of customization and integration with third-party solutions.

Microsoft Copilot is currently only available in Commercial tenants.

Microsoft Government Community Cloud (GCC) is designed specifically for U.S. government agencies and their partners to meet higher compliance and security requirements. It includes features like commercial Microsoft cloud services but offers enhanced data protection and regulatory compliance to meet federal, state, and local government needs.

Key aspects include:

    1. Data Sovereignty: Data residency in the U.S.
    2. Compliance: Meets certifications like FedRAMP, CJIS, and more.
    3. Security: Enhanced security features to protect sensitive government data.

GCC tenants have a higher level of security and compliance than commercial tenants, as they meet the requirements of the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Moderate baseline, the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other standards.

GCC tenants have access to most of the Microsoft cloud services, except for some features that are not available or restricted due to regulatory reasons. They also have a higher cost and less flexibility than commercial tenants, as they have limited options for customization and integration with third-party solutions.

Microsoft Copilot has not been released to GCC tenants; however, Microsoft is planning on a release late summer early fall.

GCC high tenants are a type of tenant that is designed for US federal government agencies and contractors that manage data that is classified as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) or subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). GCC high tenants have the highest level of security and compliance among the Microsoft cloud environments, as they meet the requirements of the FedRAMP High baseline, the Department of Defense (DoD) Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (SRG) Level 4, and other standards.

GCC high tenants have access to a subset of the Microsoft cloud services, as some features are not available or restricted due to regulatory reasons. They also have the highest cost and the least flexibility among the Microsoft cloud tenants, as they have extremely limited options for customization and integration with third-party solutions.

Key features include:

    1. Compliance: Meets rigorous U.S. government compliance standards such as FedRAMP High, ITAR, DFARS, and CJIS.
    2. Data Residency: Ensures data residency within the continental United States.
    3. Enhanced Security: Provides advanced security measures to protect sensitive government data.
    4. Dedicated Networking: Offers dedicated networking infrastructure isolated from commercial Microsoft services.

Microsoft Copilot has not been released yet to GCC high tenants.

Choosing the right type of tenant for your organization depends on several factors, such as your security and compliance needs, your budget, and your business goals. Commercial tenants are the best option for most organizations that do not have specific regulatory or compliance needs, as they offer the most features, flexibility, and affordability. GCC tenants are the best option for government entities and contractors that need to meet the FedRAMP Moderate or CJIS standards, as they offer a higher level of security and compliance than commercial tenants, while still having access to most of the Microsoft cloud services. GCC high tenants are the best option for government agencies and contractors that handle CUI or ITAR data, as they offer the highest level of security and compliance among the Microsoft cloud environments, while still having access to a subset of the Microsoft cloud services.
