Tips for Successful Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning

12/28/21

A business needs to ensure they have both a business continuity plan and disaster recovery plan. They are similar plans that offer a business guidance in the event of a crisis but differ in how they address the issue. A business continuity plan is the playbook for maintaining core business functions, it essentially keeps the lights on at your business. Disaster recovery planning is a separate playbook outlining instructions and procedures for full data and IT Infrastructure recovery, it’s the plan for reestablishing full capacity and operations within a business.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are business continuity and disaster recovery planning:

  • Build a dedicated BCDR team. Success happens when your MSP can work directly with a dedicated in-house team comprises of members of various departments within an organization. Each organization needs to share in the responsibility of developing, implementing, and testing BCDR strategies so that the entire business is protected.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessment. An organization needs to uncover and assess a full range of possible threats or problems that might affect business activities. This is necessary to develop a robust BCDR plan. Potential threats and issues are unique to each business and industry.
  • Iron out the details. This is a key step to involve an MSP. All various IT systems, business partners, critical personnel, protocols, and objectives need to be clearly outlined to ensure interruption of service is minimal, and systems/data are restored as quickly as possible. Making effective decisions prior to a disaster can ensure the best actions are being taken during a disaster.
  • Ongoing testing and adjustments. To keep your strategy the most effective as possible, you must constantly test and adjust according to results. Conducting testing and practice drills can help uncover serious flaws and allow the BCDR teams to address them before an actual crisis. A business should determine its testing interval based on its risk level and value of potentially exposed assets.
