Microsoft Transitions Users to New Outlook Beginning January 2025
As you open the classic version Microsoft Outlook, you might encounter a prompt inviting you to switch to the new Outlook. Whether you have previously tried it and reverted to the classic version or are considering it for the first time, now is the perfect opportunity to explore the enhanced features and modern design that the new Outlook has to offer.
Since its general availability in August 2024, the new Outlook is packed with intelligent capabilities and a streamlined interface, allowing you to tailor your experience to match your preferences. To begin the transition, simply locate the Try the new Outlook toggle in the upper-right corner of your classic Outlook window.
How to Make the Switch
- Select the Toggle: Click on the toggle to initiate the download of the new Outlook for Windows app. The installation process may take a few minutes.
- Sign In: Once installed, classic Outlook will close, and the new Outlook will open. You can log in and opt to import your accounts and settings from here.
- Switch Back Anytime: If you wish to return to classic Outlook, you can do so at any time using the toggle.
If you have not opted for the new Outlook yet, you may receive in-app notifications prompting you to switch. Starting in January 2025, users with Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Premium licenses are automatically migrated from the classic Outlook for Windows to new Outlook for Windows. Both users and IT Admins can disable this automatic transition if they wish to delay.

– Microsoft 365 Business Premium – January 6, 2025
– Microsoft 365 Enterprise – April 1, 2026
From October 2024, classic Outlook users with personal Microsoft accounts will also be transitioned automatically. This switch simplifies your experience and is designed to help you explore the new Outlook while gathering your feedback. If you prefer not to switch automatically, you can disable the option in the classic Outlook settings.
Users with work or school accounts on an Enterprise plan will not be automatically switched but are encouraged to try the new Outlook. If you do not see the Try the new Outlook toggle, it may be due to using a work or school account that is not supported or if your admin has hidden the option. Ensure that your account is eligible for the new Outlook.
The transition to the new Outlook brings a host of benefits aimed at enhancing your productivity.
