Microsoft to Phase Out Remote Desktop App
Microsoft has announced that its legacy Remote Desktop app for Windows will no longer be supported after May 27, 2025. While this may sound like a meaningful change, users are not losing functionality—instead, Microsoft is transitioning to a more unified approach with the modern Windows app. This shift reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy to integrate remote desktop capabilities into its cloud-centric services.
The Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be retired and unavailable for download starting May 27, 2025. Users who rely on this app to connect to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box will need to migrate to the Windows app to maintain access. After this date, connections to these services via the legacy Remote Desktop app will be blocked.
For other Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections, the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app on Windows will remain functional until it is fully integrated into the Windows app.
This transition aligns with Microsoft’s push toward a cloud-first ecosystem. The Windows app serves as a unified solution for accessing cloud and remote PCs, such as virtual desktops via Windows 365. This simplified approach reflects Microsoft’s vision of delivering remote computing experiences seamlessly across devices.
Although the name “Windows app” might seem confusing, it highlights Microsoft’s intent to position Windows increasingly as a cloud-based service, streamlining how users interact with cloud-hosted and on-premises environments.
To prepare for this transition, businesses should:
- Evaluate Current Usage: Identify whether your team relies on the Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app for any critical workflows.
- Transition to the Windows App: Begin migrating to the Windows app to ensure uninterrupted access to services like Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop.
- Stay Updated: Monitor Microsoft’s updates regarding the integration of the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app into the Windows app.
