Microsoft announced that on January 15, 2024, the Microsoft 365 Browser Extension will reach end of support and removed from the Microsoft Edge and Good Chrome web stores. This extension used to be the Office extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft is recommending users to remove the extension once it is no longer supported. You will soon see a notification with instructions on how to remove it or you can visit the Microsoft support page. After this date, the extension will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, or technical support.

If you are disappointed by this latest retirement news, there are a few other browser extensions Microsoft is recommending:

  • For single sign-on with Windows Accounts in Chrome, we recommend the Windows Account browser extension here.
  • To cut, copy, and paste via right-click menus in M365 (Office) web apps in Chrome, they recommend this extension here.

The Microsoft 365 Browser Extension has been downloaded at least ten million times across the two web stores. Microsoft did not share why it is retiring the popular extension.
