Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023 Week Two Key Behavior

10/09/23

As we begin our second week in October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we turn to another key behavior both individuals and businesses should turn their attention to ensure they are giving cybersecurity the time and attention they should. Using strong passwords and a password manager.

The average user has gone from having a few passwords, to now managing upwards of one hundred. And, if you are following the rule of thumb for strong password habits, every password should be unique from the next, this means one hundred different passwords. Most of us have a challenging time remembering one unique password!

Password managers can save users the trouble of having to remember not only multiple passwords, but which passwords belong to which application or website. Not only that, but they make accounts safer by recommending strong, unique passwords and storing them all in one central location, so you no longer must worry about remembering them all.

A hacker can quickly crack weak passwords or easy-to-guess passwords. Using a strong password is one of the easiest steps a user can take to protect their accounts from compromise and outside threats.

If you are not using a password manager, here are some tips to strengthen your passwords:

  • Longer is stronger: Passwords with at least sixteen characters are hardest to crack.
  • Not easy to guess: Use a random string of mixed-case letters, numbers, and symbols. If you need to memorize a password, create a memorable “passphrase” of 5 – 7 unrelated words. Get creative!
  • One of a kind: Use a unique password for each account. Do not duplicate.

In a business environment, the use of strong passwords can be automatically enforced, and password managers can be managed centrally by system administrators to ensure a seamless and secure user experience for all employees. Not sure how to do this? Let the experts at 2W Tech help!
