As we begin our third week in October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we turn to another key behavior both individuals and businesses should turn their attention to ensure they are giving cybersecurity the time and attention they should. Keep software updated.

This key behavior is certainly basic and a little outdated, but often overlooked. One of the easiest ways to keep your information secure is to keep your software and applications updated. Sometimes software updates may fall through the cracks, usually because no one knows who is responsible for running the update. An excellent tip to prevent this from happening is to develop clear and actionable guidelines for everyone.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind when it comes to software and apps:

  • Update often: As soon as an update becomes available, update it. They fix general software problems and provide new security patches.
  • Get updates only from original source: Only download software updates from where you originally got the software. Do not use hacked, pirated, or unlicensed versions of software.
  • Automate updates: Software from legitimate companies usually provides an option to update your software automatically. When there is an update available, it gives a reminder so you can easily start the process.
  • Watch for fakes: Beware of pop-up windows when visiting a website, especially if it asks you to download something or fill out a form.
