What Could Be Ailing Your Network?

11/10/15

I am sure that you have heard the saying “no one knows your business as well as you do.” This is true. However, there are times that having an outside opinion may be the best thing for your organization. Whether you have an IT person on staff or not, technology is always evolving and it hard for a single person or organization who doesn’t make it their sole focus to keep up with the evolution. Being an IT VAR and Consultant, there are times we are invited into an organization because a need arises or a problem occurs. In some cases, the client has done the research and understands what they want to purchase and why. Usually, it’s not that easy.

The closer you are to something, the harder it usually is to see its faults. I can’t tell you how many times we have walked into an organization and had discussions with an IT Manager or Owner or whoever handles their IT about how their system and networks are functioning. 75% of the time, their view is clouded. If you are an IT Manager, you could be too close to the systems everyday to recognize as things are starting to occur such as slow-downs, echoes in the phone system, software programs out-of-date, etc… .If you are another member of the staff or an owner, you probably don’t have the bandwidth to stay close enough to the technology to even recognize when things are breaking or completely broken. The issue with something like outdated software, is that you might not notice for an extended period of time. And during that time, security breaches and other issue may occur. It could also be that you recognize you have some issues and plan to handle them internally but aren’t able to get them in a timely manner. Once something breaks, it usually is the start of a bigger issue and one that may not be solved easily.
Just because you don’t see something does not mean it is not there. There are tools that many IT Consultants and VARs have at their disposal that can test areas of your networks that may not be visible to you. If you don’t know what’s ailing your network, a network assessment can help. Most IT Consultants have a checklist they follow and go item by item and check the health of everything that makes up your network. It is important to have your network checked at least once a year to make sure everything is running properly. 2W Tech has a system for conducting network assessments and would be happy to assist your IT department or staff in making sure your networks are up and running smooth. If anything in your network is ailing, we will help you find it and fix it.
