Share CAD Files Through Microsoft Azure Storage Solutions

04/03/20

Now that we’re all working from home indefinitely, it’s time to ensure we’re all being as productive as possible. As a manufacturer with automation throughout your facility, the machines can take care of themselves with the click of a link. However, how can your engineers remain productive if those CAD files are too large to share in traditional ways?

Microsoft Azure has a solution for that.

Azure allows you to enable large file shares on your storage account — file shares you can scale up to 100 TiB. You can enable this scaling on your existing storage accounts for your existing file shares.

And remember, while this may be an extra cost during lean times, keep in mind that you pay for your Azure storage as you use it. You scale to your specific needs.

Before using this solution, you must make sure you have the prerequisites in place: create a free Azure subscription, and install the latest versions of Azure CLI and Azure PowerShell if you intend to use them.

There are also restrictions on this solutions. For now, you can only use locally-redundant storage, or zone-redundant storage on large file share-enabled accounts. You can’t use geo-zone-redundant storage, geo-redundant storage, or read-access geo-redundant storage. Enabling large file shares on an account is an irreversible process. After you enable it, you won’t be able to convert the account to GZRS, GRS, or RA-GRS.

Once you’ve activated your Azure storage account, you’ll need to install the latest version of the Azure CLI to enable the large file shares. Then install the latest version of the Azure PowerShell.

Once these are up and running, access the File shares tab in your storage account and select + File share. Enter a name for this file share then select Create.
