Microsoft Expanding Preview Access to Microsoft 365 Copilot

05/09/23

Microsoft just announced they are expanding preview access to its Microsoft 365 Copilot, their digital assistant based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 that brings AI-powered capabilities across the Microsoft 365 platform.

Microsoft is launching the Microsoft 365 Copilot Early Access Program, which is by invitation only, and will be rolled out to six hundred global customers. Up to this point, only twenty customers have been able to evaluate the Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Microsoft is also introducing a range of new capabilities to the Microsoft 365 Copilot. A new Semantic Index feature is being rolled out for Enterprise M365 E3 or E5 suite that creates an intuitive map of both user and company data. This tool is critical to getting relevant, actionable responses to prompts in Microsoft 365 Copilot. This tool lets Copilot more accurately report on internal company data, alongside some new Copilot features for apps like Microsoft Whiteboard, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Copilot is also being added to Whiteboard, Microsoft’s digital canvas app used primarily for brainstorming. Copilots can help users generate ideas regarding specific topics and summarize Whiteboard content. Copilot can also use Microsoft Designer, their graphic design app, to bring those ideas to life by generating images based on the ideas created on the Whiteboard.

Some other new capabilities include Microsoft PowerPoint getting DALL-E added, which is an Open-AI text to image generator. Copilot in PowerPoint can also optimize text. Outlook is receiving new Copilot coaching capabilities that provides writing guidance when drafting emails under tight deadlines or when managing sensitive information.

No public release data has been set yet by Microsoft. There is a chance we may see a few more of these preview updates further expanding capabilities before that happens.
