Welcome to IT 101, where the experts at 2W Tech will tackle a hot topic in the IT industry and break it down for educational purposes. Today’s topic is cryptography.

Cryptography has been used throughout the ages as a way to transfer information that is meant only for certain people. Today, cryptography plays an essential role in cybersecurity to keep data out of the hands of cybercriminals throughout the world.

By definition, cryptography is the science of transforming information into a secure form so that unauthorized persons cannot access it. Cryptography and cybersecurity work hand-in-hand to keep that information away from cybercriminals via five basic protections:

  • Confidentiality – When private information is transmitted across the network or stored on a file server, its contents can be encrypted, which allows only authorized individuals who have the key to see it.
  • Integrity – Because ciphertext requires that a key must be used in order to open the data before it can be changed, cryptography can ensure its integrity.
  • Availability – The authenticity of the sender can be verified through cryptography.
  • Non-repudiation – In information technology, non-repudiation is the process of proving that a user performed an action. Non-repudiation prevents an individual from fraudulently “reneging” on an action.

Crack the code of cryptography to give your organization an extra layer of cybersecurity. But you don’t have to do it alone. Contact 2W Tech today to get started with your Cybersecurity Compliance Program and let our IT consultants do the work for you.
