Could Director of Remote Work Be Your Next Hire?

09/29/20

Facebook made headlines last week when the social media giant announced it was looking to hire a director of remote work as part of its permanent shift to working from home. As we all have discovered in the crash course in telecommuting thrust upon us during the COVID-19 pandemic, it takes plenty of expertise to make working from home seem like normal.

Facebook isn’t the only company considering this new role for their organization. GitLab – the open-source software firm which has been completely remote since 2011 – has employed a head of remote since summer of 2019. In that position, tech advising is one of the many capabilities that must be on display.

IT on its own is a huge factor for remote work. Not only is it the main reason we’re able to work safely and consistently from the comfort of our own homes, but it is also the reason cybercriminals can take advantage of personal devices on your organization’s network. IT’s role in remote working comes in many forms – setting up VPNs for safe networking, troubleshooting and videoconferencing with colleagues and clients alike.

A “head of remote” work could be a part-time IT person with all these IT needs, so to speak. They could be involved with developing company policy for remote work as well as planning online events to maintain a semblance of a desired corporate culture.

It’s a big job, too. Hewlett-Packard, for instance, realized the job is too much for just one individual. The company has tasked 10 senior executives from departments like real estate, human resources, IT and communications to work on its new approach to remote and onsite work.

One interesting aspect of the times we’re living in due to the COVID-19 pandemic is that there is an opportunity to mold the way work looks and feels for generations to come. We all have adjusted to the pros and cons of working from home in 2020, but are you ready for remote work to remain a part of your operations for the long term?
