Microsoft to Launch Controversial Windows Recall AI Search Feature for Testers in October

Microsoft announced yesterday that it will release its controversial Windows Recall AI search feature for users to test starting in October. In an addendum to a blog post from June, Microsoft stated they were dedicated to providing a reliable and secure Recall (preview) experience on Copilot+ PCs. They announced that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders starting in October. As mentioned on June 13, they have adjusted their release strategy to benefit from the valuable insights from their Windows Insider community before making Recall available to all Copilot+ PCs. Security remains their top priority, and they will share more details in a blog post when Recall becomes available to Windows Insiders in October.

Recall captures screenshots of on-screen activity, allowing users to search for previously viewed information. However, security researchers quickly raised concerns about the risks of Windows automatically capturing images without user consent. They released open-source software demonstrating how personal information could become easily accessible to attackers. In response, Microsoft announced in June that Recall would be disabled by default and committed to enhancing the feature’s security.

Microsoft has not specified when the Recall feature will be broadly released for Windows computers that meet the system requirements, known as Copilot+ PCs. In May, Microsoft introduced this new class of Windows PCs from various device makers, capable of running AI workloads, and demonstrated Recall running on them.

The timing of Recall’s wide release could be crucial. If Microsoft makes Recall available on all compatible devices by the holiday season, it might boost consumer interest in purchasing new computers.
